My 19-year old sister, who is a fantastic writer and is at journalism school, asked me the same question today.

I've been reading a bunch of pedagogical theory the past couple of weeks and I've come to the conclusion that writing isn't exactly something one teaches, it is something one learns. So my job, then, will be to facilitate that learning as best I can. I can teach the mechanics - how to cite sources, how to use commas, even how to structure essays - but the actual writing will be learned through practice and constructive criticism. No problem.

Are you sure writing is a skill that can be taught? (If it's not, you're off the hook: there's no way anyone can know if you're just faking it.)

If all history is skewed, then what grounds do historians have for bitching about the poetic licenses taken in The Tudors?

The Fawks mask is worn by V because he blows up government buildings. (When it's remade in 20 years set in the US he'll wear a Timothy McVeigh mask.) Anonymous (the anti-Scientologists) use it in reference to the scene at the end of Vendetta where V is hidden by a masked crowd (which itself is a reference to the Thomas Crown Affair, maybe?).

The V for Vendetta thing IS really odd. V is an anarchist hero, yet he wears the face of Britain's hated conservative anti-hero. I guess the association is more about style than it is about ideology. That one goes right up there with them having chosen Guy as one of the BBC's "Most Important Britons" or whatever the list was called. They just can't decide how they feel about him, can they?

I didn't know the anti-Scientology people used him as well. That seems random and bizarre.

Also, hi Dan! You made my morning! Miss you over here. Hugs to you and your lovely lady friend. xoxo

What I find confusing is how the anti-Scientology folks fixated on good old Guy as their mask de plume (and yes, that makes no sense). I get the whole _V for Vendetta_ thing, but still, fucking odd.

Also: hi Tara! Frigid hugs from Edmonton.

There's a metanarrative of oppression, a craving for authenticity and a plan for progress: what's not Enlightenment here?

Thank you for your comments, "Get rid of yourself." I just dug up a copy of "At Daggers Dawn" and I'll try to post something about it after I finish reading.

And for Jared, a question: when you ask who is being freed, what do you think they are being freed from? Certainly not from capital, not in the way Marx theorized. I think the whole point of everyday politics is that capital is so prolific we can't escape it, so we need to find ways to live with it that still allow us to connect with each other and our social realities. Sure, the activities that allow us to "make do" are still labour, but the idea is to use our labour power in a different way, to somehow improve the quality of our everyday lives. Yes, there is work to be done - but there's work to be done anyway. Wouldn't you rather work to better ends? Admittedly, I don't know exactly what that would look like either - which is part of what I'm trying to work out here.

And a small bone to pick: There is no great enlightenment project that we're working towards - the great enlightenment project is what got us here in the first place.

Thanks Dalyn. The more I think about it, the more I wish I'd left it all up. I still have the post but the comment is permanently gone. Maybe I'll put it back up with an attached caveat or something!

Don't worry Bridget, I have plenty of complaining to do and it's bound to land here again!
